it can be difficult at times to hold on to our traditions, our identity but yet here we are, being our wonderful indigenous selves, taking care of our communities, with our practices, our values and dreams. Using traditional knowledge to take care of the earth by planting trees, planting corn, feeding the soil, riding bikes and advocating for more, because we deserve more.
Being born in Sonora, raised in Tucson. The challenge has been holding onto the pieces that make me who I am. Relearning practices and understanding while creating new ones.
We often talk about being urban natives. For some of us we have always been urban from the foundation of our peoples great empires across turtle island, our government structure older than the constitutions or treaties. Our practices, our way is what we carry with us no matter where we are at, whether it be on the Rez or in the Barrio or in the board room. We are always indigenous. Our practice to mesh, blend and exist with multiple realities is beautiful.
We are ancestors and descendants all at once.
